Distribution of Banknotes during November 10 to December 19, 2016
Consequent to the announcement of withdrawal of Legal Tender status of banknotes of ₹ 500 and ₹ 1000 denominations from the midnight of November 8, 2016, the Reserve Bank of India made arrangements for supply of adequate quantity of banknotes in various denominations to the public through the banks. Over the period from November 10, 2016 upto December 19, 2016, banks have reported that banknotes worth ₹ 5,92,613 crore have been issued to public either over the counter

RBI Imposes Monetary Penalty on Five Authorised Dealer Banks
The Reserve Bank of India has imposed monetary penalty on the following five banks for violation of Reserve Bank of India’s instructions on reporting requirements of the Foreign Exchange Management Act, 1999 (FEMA). Banks should accept Pre-2005 Banknotes in Deposit: RBI clarifies
The Reserve Bank of India has clarified that bank should accept deposits of pre-2005 banknotes in the denominations of ₹ 500 and ₹ 1000 but not reissue these. These notes can be exchanged at the Reserve Bank Offices only. RBI to issue of ₹ 50 Banknotes with inset letter ‘R’, with numerals in ascending size in number panels, and without intaglio printing
The Reserve Bank of India will shortly issue ₹ 50 denomination banknotes in the Mahatma Gandhi Series-2005, with inset letter ‘R’ in both the number panels, bearing signature of Dr. Urjit R. Patel, Governor, Reserve Bank of India, and the year of printing '2016' printed on the reverse of the banknote. These banknotes have the ascending size of numerals in the number panels; the banknotes are similar to the banknotes of ₹ 50 issued earlier in Mahatma Gandhi Series-2005
