New Coins of Rs.5/- in Cupro-Nickel (CN) to commemorate the occasion of "150 years - The First War of Independence"


The Reserve Bank of India will put into circulation New Cupro-Nickel (CN) coins of Rs.5/- issued by the Government of India to commemorate the occasion of “150 Years – The First War of Independence“.

Design  :

Obverse : This face of coin shall bear the Lion Capital of Ashoka Pillar with the legend  “सत्यमेव जयते“ inscribed below, flanked on the left upper periphery with the word “भारत“  in Hindi and on the right upper periphery flanked with the word “India“ in English, and it shall also bear the denominational value “5“ in International Numerals below the Lion Capital flanked on the left lower periphery with the word “रूपये“ in Hindi and on the right lower periphery with the word  “RUPEES“ in English.

Reverse : This face of the coin shall bear the combined portrait of General Tatia Tope on left side, Emperor Bahadur Shah II on the right side and at the centre the Warrior Rani Laxmibai of Jhansi in the battlefield, flanked on the left periphery with the words “प्रतम स्वतंत्रता संग्राम“ and “150 साल“ in Hindi and on the right periphery with the words “150 YEARS – THE FIRST WAR OF INDEPENDENCE“ in English with the period 1857-2007 written at the bottom.

Security edge for 5 Rupees :

The edge of the coin shall be milled with serrated or upright milling and security edge.  At the centre of the edge there shall be shallow groove with a design inside the two sections separated by blank spaces.  This design shall consists of chain of beads in relief and each bead being followed by one inclined line in relief.  There shall be total 30 lines and 30 beads.

The coin is a legal tender as provided in the Coinage Act, 1906.  The existing Five Rupees Coins in circulation shall also continue to be legal tender.
