Today, the Reserve Bank released the August 2024 issue of its monthly Bulletin. The Bulletin includes monetary policy statement, five speeches, seven articles, and current statistics. The seven articles are: I. State of the Economy; II. Are Food Prices Spilling Over?; III. Union Budget 2024-25: An Assessment; IV. Estimate of Spare Capacity for India’s Services Sector; V. Evolution of FinTech and Central Banks: A Text Mining-Based Survey; VI. Private Corporate Investment: Growth in 2023-24 and Outlook for 2024-25; and VII. Measuring Progress in Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs): An Application of Natural Language Processing (NLP) on Budget Documents.

Survey of Foreign Liabilities and Assets of Mutual Fund Companies – 2023-24

Today, the Reserve Bank released the results of the 2023-24 round of the survey of Foreign Liabilities and Assets of the Mutual Fund (MF) Companies1. The survey covered 45 Indian MF companies (list in Annex) and their Asset Management Companies (AMCs), which held/acquired foreign assets/ liabilities during 2023-24 and/or in the preceding years. The information on face value and market value of units held by non-residents, unit premium reserve, other foreign liabilities and assets of MF companies as at end of the financial year were collected under the survey. The external assets and liabilities of their AMCs were taken from the annual census on foreign liabilities and assets (FLA) of direct investment companies for the reference period. Highlights:

RBI announces constitution of an Expert Committee on Benchmarking of its Statistics

The Reserve Bank has constituted an Expert Committee to: (a) benchmark the statistics regularly disseminated by it against global standards / best practices; (b) study the quality of other regular data, where such benchmarks do not exist (e.g., sectors of national priority); and (c) provide guidance on the scope for any further data refinement. Following is the composition of the Expert Committee: 1 Dr. Michael Debabrata Patra Deputy Governor, Reserve Bank of India Chairman

Sectoral Deployment of Bank Credit – June 2024

Data on sectoral deployment of bank credit for the month of June 20241 collected from 41 select scheduled commercial banks, accounting for about 95 per cent of the total non-food credit deployed by all scheduled commercial banks, are set out in Statements I and II. On a year-on-year (y-o-y) basis, non-food bank credit2 registered a growth of 13.9 per cent in June 20243 as compared with 16.3 per cent a year ago due to unfavourable base effect. 

Data on sectoral deployment of bank credit for the month of June 20241 collected from 41 select scheduled commercial banks, accounting for about 95 per cent of the total non-food credit deployed by all scheduled commercial banks, are set out in Statements I and II. Launching of 42nd Round of Quarterly Services and Infrastructure Outlook Survey (SIOS) Q2:2024-25

The Reserve Bank has launched the 42nd round of the quarterly Services and Infrastructure Outlook Survey (SIOS) for the reference period July-September 2024. The survey assesses the business situation for the current quarter (Q2:2024-25) from selected companies in the services and infrastructure sectors in India and their expectations for the ensuing quarter (Q3:2024-25) based on qualitative responses on a set of indicators pertaining to demand conditions, financial conditions, employment conditions and the price situation. The outlook on key parameters for the two subsequent quarters (Q4:2024-25 and Q1:2025-26) are also covered.

RBI releases data on ECB / FCCB / RDB for May 2024

The Reserve Bank of India has today released the data on External Commercial Borrowings (ECB), Foreign Currency Convertible Bonds (FCCB) and Rupee Denominated Bonds (RDB) both, through Automatic Route and Approval Route, for the month of May 2024.

Measuring Productivity at the Industry Level-The India KLEMS Database

The Reserve Bank of India today placed on its website an update on “Measuring Productivity at the Industry Level-The India KLEMS [Capital (K), Labour (L), Energy (E), Material (M) and Services (S)] Database” comprising the Data Manual 2024 and time-series data on productivity for 27 industries covering the period 1980-81 to 2022-23. The database, which has KLEMS data for an additional year, i.e., 2022-23, is expected to aid the analysis of productivity trends in India at disaggregated industry levels.

RBI launches the July 2024 round of the Inflation Expectations Survey of Households

The Reserve Bank of India has been regularly conducting Inflation Expectations Survey of Households (IESH). The July 2024 round of the survey is being launched. The survey aims at capturing subjective assessments on price movements and inflation, based on their individual consumption baskets, across 19 cities, viz., Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Bhopal, Bhubaneswar, Chandigarh, Chennai, Delhi, Guwahati, Hyderabad, Jaipur, Jammu, Kolkata, Lucknow, Mumbai, Nagpur, Patna, Raipur, Ranchi and Thiruvananthapuram. The survey seeks qualitative responses from households on price changes (general prices as well as prices of specific product groups) in the three months ahead as well as in the one year ahead period and quantitative responses on current, three months ahead and one year ahead inflation rates. The results of this survey provide useful inputs for monetary policy.

The survey seeks qualitative responses from households, regarding their sentiments on general economic situation, employment scenario, price level, households’ income and spending. The survey is conducted regularly in 19 cities, viz., Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Bhopal, Bhubaneswar, Chandigarh, Chennai, Delhi, Guwahati, Hyderabad, Jaipur, Jammu, Kolkata, Lucknow, Mumbai, Nagpur, Patna, Raipur, Ranchi and Thiruvananthapuram. The results of this survey provide useful inputs for monetary policy. The agency, M/s Hansa Research Group Pvt. Ltd., Mumbai has been engaged to conduct the survey of this round on behalf of the Reserve Bank of India. For this purpose, the selected households will be approached by the agency and they are requested to provide their responses. The Reserve Bank of India, in consultation with the State Governments/Union Territories (UTs), announces that the quantum of total market borrowings by the State Governments/UTs for the quarter July – September 2024, is expected to be ₹2,63,562 Crore. The weekly schedule of auctions to be held during the quarter along with the name of States/UTs who have confirmed participation and tentative amounts indicated by them is as under

Performance of Private Corporate Business Sector during 2023-24

Today, the Reserve Bank released data on the performance of the private corporate sector during 2023-24 drawn from abridged financial results of 3,281 listed non-government non-financial (NGNF) companies. These also include data for 2022-23 to enable comparison (web-link https://data.rbi.org.in/DBIE) Highlights Sales Annual sales growth of listed private non-financial companies moderated to 4.7 per cent during 2023-24 from the high of 19.8 per cent in 2022-23, which included the post-pandemic recovery period (Table 1A). Among major sectors, sales of manufacturing, information technology (IT) and non-IT services companies rose by 3.5 per cent, 5.5 per cent and 7.9 per cent, respectively, during 2023

Lending and Deposit Rates of Scheduled Commercial Banks – June 2024

Data on lending and deposit rates of scheduled commercial banks (SCBs) (excluding regional rural banks and small finance banks) received during the month of June 2024 are set out in Tables 1 to 7. Highlights: Lending Rates: • The weighted average lending rate (WALR) on fresh rupee loans of SCBs stood at 9.39 per cent in May 2024 (9.55 per cent in April 2024). • The WALR on outstanding rupee loans of SCBs was unchanged at 9.83 per cent in May 2024. • 1-Year median Marginal Cost of fund-based Lending Rate (MCLR) of SCBs moved to 8.85 per cent in June 2024 from 8.79 per cent in May 2024.

RBI discusses the Evolution and Way Forward for Central Bank Statistics in its 18th Statistics Day Conference

Today, the Reserve Bank held its 18th Annual Statistics Day Conference with the theme ‘RBI Statistics@90’ as a part of the ‘National Statistics Day’ celebrations in the memory of late Professor Prasanta Chandra Mahalanobis, who made pioneering contributions in laying the foundations of modern day official statistics in India.

Sectoral Deployment of Bank Credit – May 2024

Data on sectoral deployment of bank credit for the month of May 2024 collected from 41 select scheduled commercial banks, accounting for about 95 per cent of the total non-food credit deployed by all scheduled commercial banks, are set out in Statements I and II. On a year-on-year (y-o-y) basis, non-food bank credit registered a growth of 16.2 per cent in May 2024 as compared with 15.5 per cent a year ago.

Today, the Reserve Bank released the 29th issue of the Financial Stability Report (FSR), which reflects the collective assessment of the Sub-Committee of the Financial Stability and Development Council (FSDC) on the resilience of the Indian financial system and risks to financial stability. Highlights:The global economy is facing heightened risks from prolonged geopolitical tensions, elevated public debt, and the slow progress in the last mile of disinflation. Despite these challenges, the global financial system has remained resilient, and financial conditions stable.
