Exchange of soiled notes and notes of Re.1, Rs.2 and Rs.5 denomination
The Reserve Bank of India has authorised all the branches of public sector banks as also certain private sector banks' maintaining currency chests to accept and exchange all types of soiled/mutilated notes, in particular notes in denominations of Re.1, Rs.2 and Rs.5, which are payable under the Reserve Bank of India (Note Refund) Rules. Issue of Rs.500 notes in Mahatma Gandhi Series with capital letter "C" inset in numbering panels
The Reserve Bank of India will shortly be issuing Rs.500 notes in Mahatma Gandhi Series bearing the signature of Dr. Bimal Jalan, Governor with capital letter "C" inset in both numbering panels. Except for this change, the design of the Rs.500 notes to be issued now is similar to those issued earlier in the 'Mahatma Gandhi' Series. The Reserve Bank of India, Mumbai Office has made special arrangements to make available coins upto Rs.300 packed in 'Potlas' of 100 pieces each of Re.1, 0.50 paise and 0.25 paise in exchange. The Reserve Bank has advised in public interest that all Rs.500 notes issued by the Reserve Bank are legal tenders and banks and members of public should continue to accept these notes in their daily transactions or in exchange. Considering the good response from the public to these efforts, it has been decided to repeat such mobile distribution of coins every week at
