Distribution of Coins through Post Offices
With a view to enlarging the facility particularly in the rural and semi-urban area, the Reserve Bank of India has arranged with the postal authorities in Mumbai for distribution of coins through the post offices in Maharashtra and Goa. The scheme was launched in Mumbai on June 4, 2002. Issue of Rs.5 notes in Mahatma Gandhi Series with capital letter "L" inset in numbering panel
The Reserve Bank of India will shortly be issuing Rs.5 notes in Mahatma Gandhi Series with capital letter "L" inset in numbering panel bearing the signature of Dr. Bimal Jalan, Governor. Except for the change in inset letter, the design of the Rs.5 notes to be issued now is similar in all respects to those issued earlier in the Mahatma Gandhi Series. Rs.500/- denomination notes: Some Facts
The Reserve Bank of India has advised that currently three designs of Rs.500/- notes are in circulation. Rs.500/- notes in predominantly green colour was first issued in 1987. Currency notes and coins of Rs.2 and Rs.5 Denominations are Legal Tender
At certain locations in a few cities/towns, bill boards have appeared indicating that the notes and coins of Rs.2 and Rs.5 denominations have ceased to be legal tender. The report is baseless and misleading. The Reserve Bank of India clarifies that the notes and coins of Rs.2 and Rs.5 continue to be legal tender. The members of public can freely accept and transact their business in these notes and coins and need not to be misled by any such propaganda.N.L. Rao Asst.

The Reserve Bank of India will be reintroducing the Rs. 5 notes in the existing design with the Ashoka Pillar watermark in the watermark window and the Ashoka Pillar emblem on the right side on the obverse. The reverse of the note depicts a farmer ploughing a field with a tractor. The colour scheme of the note, as in the existing design, is predominantly light green and mild pink.
