FOREWORD

“Statistical Tables Relating to Banks in India” provides useful information on liabilities and assets, income and expenditure, and a number of other parameters like priority sector advances, NPAs and employment. It also contains data on important ratios on profitability, productivity and efficiency. The main focus of this publication is to present bank-wise data for all scheduled commercial banks at one place facilitating comparison of performance of banks in its multi-dimensions.

The present volume of the publication is the 61st in the series. The first volume entitled “Statistical Tables Relating to Banks in India and Burma” covering data for the years 1939 and 1940 was published by the Reserve Bank of India in 1941. If the volumes published by the Department of Commercial Intelligence and Statistics till 1941 are also considered, then the current edition is the 86th in the series. Cover page of the 25th issue which contained data for the year 1938 and first page of the first issue published are included in the current volume, by way of historical link.

The voluminous work relating to this publication has been undertaken in the Department of Statistical Analysis and Computer Services of the Bank. The efforts of the staff of the Division of Banking Studies under the charge of Dr.A.S.Ramasastri, Director, are commendable. Shri S.S.Mishra, Adviser and Dr.K.S.Ramachandra Rao, Principal Adviser provided valuable guidance for bringing out the publication.

I am sure that, as in the past, the current volume would prove to be a valuable source for analysis of performance of Indian banks. The publication in CD-ROM format with query facilities enhances its usefulness.
