The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) had announced the withdrawal of ₹2000 denomination banknotes from circulation vide Press Release 2023-2024/257 dated May 19, 2023. The status of withdrawal of ₹2000 banknotes is periodically published by the RBI. The last press release in this regard was published on December 01, 2023.
In terms of Para 13 (ii) of Government of India Notification F.No.4(10)- B(W&M)/2020 dated June 26, 2020 on Floating Rate Savings Bonds, 2020 (Taxable)- FRSB 2020 (T), the coupon/interest rate of the bond would be reset half yearly, starting with January 01, 2021 and the coupon/interest rate will be set at a spread of (+) 35 bps over the prevailing National Savings Certificate (NSC) rate.

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI), vide order dated December 29, 2023, has cancelled the licence of “Musiri Urban Co-operative Bank Ltd., Musiri”. Consequently, the bank ceases to carry on banking business, with effect from the close of business on December 29, 2023. The Registrar of Cooperative Societies, Tamil Nadu has also been requested to issue an order for winding up the bank and appoint a liquidator for the bank.
As announced in the ‘Statement on Developmental and Regulatory Policies’ issued as part of Monetary Policy Statement dated October 06, 2023, the Reserve Bank, has issued Master Direction - Reserve Bank of India (Internal Ombudsman for Regulated Entities) Directions, 2023 to harmonise the instructions applicable to the various regulated entities on the Internal Ombudsman (IO) mechanism.

In terms of GOI Notifications F. No. 4(22) – B(W&M)/2018 dated October 08, 2018 (SGB 2018-19, Series IV - Issue date January 01, 2019) and F. No. 4(25) - W&M/2017 dated October 06, 2017 (SGB 2017-18, Series XIV - Issue date January 01, 2018) on Sovereign Gold Bond Scheme, premature redemption of Gold Bond may be permitted after fifth year from the date of issue of such Gold Bond on the date on which interest is payable. Accordingly, the next due date of premature redemption of the above two tranches shall be January 01, 2024.
The Reserve Bank of India (RBI), vide order dated December 29, 2023, has cancelled the licence of Adarsh Mahila Nagari Sahakari Bank Maryadit, Aurangabad, Maharashtra. Consequently, the bank ceases to carry on banking business, with effect from the close of business on December 29, 2023. The Reserve Bank of India has been regularly conducting Inflation Expectations Survey of Households (IESH). The January 2024 round of the survey is being launched. The survey aims at capturing subjective assessments on price movements and inflation, based on their individual consumption baskets, across 19 cities, viz., Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Bhopal, Bhubaneswar, Chandigarh, Chennai, Delhi, Guwahati, Hyderabad, Jaipur, Jammu, Kolkata, Lucknow, Mumbai, Nagpur, Patna, Raipur, Ranchi and Thiruvananthapuram.

The Payments Infrastructure Development Fund (PIDF) Scheme was operationalised by the Reserve Bank in January 2021, for a period of three years. The objective of the scheme was to encourage deployment of payment acceptance infrastructure such as physical Point of Sale (PoS) terminals, Quick Response (QR) codes, in tier-3 to tier-6 centres, North Eastern states and Union Territories (U.T.s) of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh. SBI, HDFC Bank and ICICI Bank continue to be identified as Domestic Systemically Important Banks (D-SIBs). While ICICI Bank continues to be in the same bucketing structure as last year, SBI and HDFC Bank move to higher buckets – SBI shifts from bucket 3 to bucket 4 and HDFC Bank shifts from bucket 1 to bucket 2. For SBI and HDFC Bank, the higher D-SIB buffer requirements on account of the bucket increase will be effective from April 1, 2025. The additional Common Equity Tier 1 (CET1) requirement will be in addition to the capital conservation buffer.
Today, the Reserve Bank released the 28th issue of the Financial Stability Report (FSR), which reflects the collective assessment of the Sub-Committee of the Financial Stability and Development Council (FSDC) on risks to financial stability and the resilience of the Indian financial system.
The Reserve Bank had issued the framework for dealing with Domestic Systemically Important Banks (D-SIBs) on July 22, 2014. In terms of this framework, the Bank is required to identify and disclose the names of banks designated as D-SIBs annually. Further, in terms of the framework, the assessment methodology, for assessing the systemic importance of banks and identification of the D-SIBs, is required to be reviewed on a periodic basis.
The Reserve Bank of India, had issued Directions under Section 35A read with Section 56 of the Banking Regulation Act, 1949 to Raigad Sahakari Bank Limited, Mumbai vide Directive No.CO.DoS.DSD.No.S2469/12-07-005/2022-23 dated July 15, 2022, for a period of six months. Today, the Reserve Bank released its web publication entitled ‘Statistical Tables relating to Banks in India: 2022-23’ covering the activities of the Indian banking sector.
Today, the Reserve Bank of India released the Report on Trend and Progress of Banking in India 2022-23, a statutory publication in compliance with Section 36 (2) of the Banking Regulation Act, 1949. This Report presents the performance of the banking sector, including co-operative banks and non-banking financial institutions, during 2022-23 and 2023-24 so far.
Currently, recourse to the Standing Deposit Facility (SDF) and the Marginal Standing Facility (MSF) is available on an overnight basis on all days, including Sundays and holidays, but reversal is permitted only on the next working day in Mumbai. As announced in the Governor’s Statement dated December 08, 2023, it has been decided to allow reversal of liquidity facilities under both SDF and MSF even during weekends and holidays with effect from December 30, 2023. The SDF/MSF bids triggered under the Automated Sweep-In and Sweep-Out (ASISO) facility will now reverse on the next calendar day. In the case of a manual bid placed through the e-Kuber portal, the choice with regard to tenor will be exercisable by the eligible entities at the time of placing of bid. Access to SDF/MSF will continue to be available on all days, including Sundays and holidays.

The framework for licensing of Authorised Persons (APs) under FEMA, 1999 was last reviewed in March 2006. Keeping in view the progressive liberalisation under FEMA, increasing integration of the Indian economy with the global economy, digitisation of payment systems, evolving institutional structure, etc. over the last two decades, it has been decided to rationalise and simplify the licensing framework for APs. The review aims to meet the emerging requirements of the rapidly growing Indian economy, achieve operational efficiency in the delivery of foreign exchange facilities to common persons, tourists, and businesses, while maintaining appropriate checks and balances

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has, by an order dated November 23, 2023, imposed a monetary penalty of ₹1.00 lakh (Rupees One lakh only) on Contai Co-operative Bank Ltd. (the bank) for non-compliance with the directions issued by RBI on ‘Know Your Customer (KYC) Directions, 2016’. This penalty has been imposed in exercise of powers conferred on RBI under the provisions of section 47 A (1) (c) read with sections 46 (4) (i) and 56 of the Banking Regulation Act, 1949.
The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has, by an order dated November 24, 2023, imposed a monetary penalty of ₹1.00 lakh (Rupees One lakh only) on Sarvodaya Co-operative Bank Limited, Mumbai (the bank) for non-compliance with the specific directions issued by RBI under Supervisory Action Framework (SAF). This penalty has been imposed in exercise of powers conferred on RBI under the provisions of Section 47 A (1) (c) read with Section 46 (4) (i) and Section 56 of the Banking Regulation Act, 1949.
The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has, by an order dated November 24, 2023, imposed a monetary penalty of ₹1.00 lakh (Rupees One lakh only) on Sanmitra Sahakari Bank Ltd., Pune (the bank) for non-compliance with the directions issued by RBI on ‘Maintenance of Deposit Accounts - Primary (Urban) Co-operative Banks’. The 605th meeting of the Central Board of Directors of Reserve Bank of India was held today in Ekta Nagar (Kevadia) under the Chairmanship of Shri Shaktikanta Das, Governor. The Board reviewed the economic and financial scenario, both domestic and global, including the challenges posed by global geopolitical developments. The Board also discussed the activities of select Central Office Departments and the draft Report on Trend and Progress of Banking in India, 2022-23.
