Indian banknotes with additional/revised security features

RBI/2004-05/485
DCM (Plg.) No. G - 43/10.01.00/2004-05

June 04, 2005

The Chairman / MD / CMD / CEO
Public Sector Banks, Private Sector Banks, Foreign Banks.

Madam/Dear Sir,

Indian banknotes with additional/revised security features

Please refer to our letters RBI/2004-05/458; DCM (Plg.) No. G40/10.01.00/2004-05 dated May 07, 2005, forwarding therewith a list of additional / new security features for Indian banknotes and DCM (Plg) No. 1122/10.01.00/2004-05 dated May 17, 2005 convening a meeting at Mumbai as also to the deliberations during the meeting on May 25, 2005.

2. At the meeting on May 25, 2005 details of the additional / revised security features were explained and it was highlighted that banks should educate their field level staff about the new security features so that they in turn can inform and guide the public about the same. It was also mentioned that banknotes with existing security features will continue to be legal tender.

3. It may also be recalled that the suggestions put forth by the banks with regard to the vendors' awareness and training of the bank staff had been accepted. You may please forward to us the details, such as names, addresses, telephone / fax numbers, e-mail addresses etc., of vendors of currency handling machines from whom you have procured such machines (sorting machines, ATM, currency exchange machines, note counting machines etc.). We propose to arrange a meeting for them so as to disseminate the information and the changes being brought about. The requisite information may please be sent to us latest by June 15, 2005.

4. An assessment of training requirement of the staff in your bank may be made and furnished to us to enable us to extend necessary co-operation for training of your staff. The assessment may be so made that the staff who are trained by RBI are in turn able to train other staff in the bank. Further, you may also make preliminary arrangements for publicity of banknotes with additional / new security features.

5. Please acknowledge receipt.

Yours faithfully

Sd/
