New Cupro-Nickel Coin of Rs.5 - to Commemorate the Occasion of 150 Birth Anniversary of Lokmanya Bal Gangadhar Tilak


The Reserve Bank of India has put into circulation New Cupro-Nickel coins of Rs.5 issued by Government  fo India to commemorate the occasion of “150th  Birth Anniversary of Lokmanya Bal Gangadhar Tilak“.  The coins conform to the following dimension, design, and composition namely :

Shape and Outside diameter

Metal Composition

Five Rupees

Circular  23 mm diameter with Security edge. Weight – 9 gms.

Cupro-Nickel Alloy
Copper   -  75%
Nickel     -   25%

Design :

Obverse : This face of coin bears the Lion Capitol of Ashoka Pillar with the legend  “mel³ecesJe pe³eles“ inscribed below, flanked on the left upper periphery with the word  “Yeejle“  in Hindi and  on the right upper periphery flanked with the word “India“ in English.  It also bears the denominational value “5“ in International Numerals below the Lion Capital flanked on the left lower periphery with the word “©he³es“ in Hindi and on the right lower periphery with the words “Rupees“ in English.  There are 52 beads on the periphery.

Reverse : This face of the coin  bears the portrait of "Lokmanya Bal Gangadhar Tilak" flanked on the upper periphery with the words “ueeskeÀceeô³e yeeue äebäeeOej fleuekeÀ keÀr 150Jerb pe³ebler“  inscribed in Hindi and on the lower periphery “150TH BIRTH ANNIVERSARY OF LOKMANYA BAL GANGADHAR TILAK“ in English.

Security edge for 5 Rupees :

The edge of the coin is milled with serrated or upright milling and Security edge.  At the centre of the edge is a shallow groove with a design inside the two sections separated by blank spaces.  This design consists of chain of beads in relief and each bead being followed by one inclined line in relief.  There are total 30 lines and 30 beads.

The coin is a legal tender as provided in the Coinage Act, 1906.  The existing Five Rupee Coins in circulation shall also continue to be legal tender.
