RBI extends the date for exchanging Pre-2005 banknotes to January 01, 2015
Following its Press Release of January 24, 2014, the Reserve Bank of India has extended the date for exchanging the pre-2005 banknotes to January 01, 2015. It has also advised banks to facilitate the exchange of these notes for full value and without causing any inconvenience whatsoever to the public. The Reserve Bank of India has today advised that after March 31, 2014, it will completely withdraw from circulation all banknotes issued prior to 2005. From April 1, 2014, the public will be required to approach banks for exchanging these notes. Banks will provide exchange facility for these notes until further communication. RBI's clarification on Scribbling on Banknotes
In the wake of rumours circulating in the market that from January 1, 2014, banks will not accept banknotes with anything written on them, the Reserve Bank has urged members of public not to fall prey to such rumours and to use their banknotes without any fear. The Reserve Bank of India today appealed to members of public not to use banknotes for making garlands, decorating pandals and places of worship or for showering on personalities in social events, etc. Such actions deface the banknotes and shorten their life, the Reserve Bank stated and added that banknotes should be respected as they are a symbol of the Sovereign and public should not misuse them and help in increasing the life of banknotes. The Reserve Bank of India will shortly issue `10/- denomination Banknotes without inset letter, in the Mahatma Gandhi Series with the signature of Dr. D. Subbarao, Governor, Reserve Bank of India, with the year of printing 2011 printed on the back of the Banknote, with incorporation of "`" symbol.
