Today, the Reserve Bank released data relating to India’s International Investment Position for end-March 2025[1]. Key Features IIP during January-March 2025:  Net claims of non-residents on India declined by US$ 34.2 billion during Q4:2024-25 to US$ 330.0 billion as at end-March 2025.

The stock of external debt at end-March 2025 as well as revised data for earlier quarters are set out in Statements I (IMF format ) and II (old format). The major developments relating to India’s external debt as at end-March 2025 are presented below.

Today, the Reserve Bank of India released the balance of payments (BoP) data for the fourth quarter (Q4), i.e., January-March of 2024-25 on its website (www.rbi.org.in). On the basis of these data, the sources of variation in foreign exchange reserves during April-March 2024-25 are detailed below in Table 1.

Key Features of India’s BoP in Q4:2024-25 • India’s current account balance recorded a surplus of US$ 13.5 billion (1.3 per cent of GDP) in Q4:2024-25 as compared with US$ 4.6 billion (0.5 per cent of GDP) in Q4:2023-24 and against a deficit of US$ 11.3 billion (1.1 per cent of GDP) in Q3:2024-25. • Merchandise trade deficit at US$ 59.5 billion in Q4:2024-25 was higher than US$ 52.0 billion in Q4:2023-24. However, it moderated from US$ 79.3 billion in Q3:2024-25.

The Reserve Bank of India has imposed a monetary penalty of Rs. 3,20,000/- (Rupees Three Lakhs Twenty Thousand only) on Citibank N.A. in exercise of powers vested in the Reserve Bank under the provisions of Section 11(3) of FEMA, 1999, for not undertaking due diligence while processing the inward remittances from a Foreign Currency Account opened by a constituent, resulting in contravention of Section 10 (4) of FEMA, 1999.

To encourage greater use of Indian Rupee (INR) for trade transactions, in July 2022, an additional arrangement in the form of Special Rupee Vostro Account (SRVA) was introduced. Several foreign banks have since opened SRVAs with banks in India. The Reserve Bank has also signed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the central banks of the United Arab Emirates, Indonesia and Maldives, to encourage cross-border transactions in local currencies. Further, in December 2023 the Foreign Exchange Management (Manner of Receipt and Payment) Regulations were revised to enable cross border transactions in all foreign currencies (including local currencies of trading partner countries) and INR.
