Earlier today, the Reserve Bank of India released balance of payments (BoP) data for January-March 2017 on its website (www.rbi.org.in). On the basis of these data, the sources of variation in foreign exchange reserves during 2016-17 have been compiled. Sources of Variation in Foreign Exchange Reserves: 2016-17 During 2016-17, there was an increase in the foreign exchange reserves. The sources of variation in the foreign exchange reserves are set out in Table 1.

On a balance of payments basis (i.e., excluding valuation effects), the foreign exchange reserves increased by US$ 21.6 billion during 2016-17 as compared with an increase of US$ 17.9 billion during 2015-16. The foreign exchange reserves in nominal terms (including the valuation effects) increased by US$ 9.8 billion during 2016-17 as compared with an increase of US$ 18.5 billion during the same period of the preceding year (Table 2).
