RBI directs Banks to accept Coins
The Reserve Bank of India has today directed banks to immediately instruct their branches to accept coins of all denominations from any member of public without any restrictions and pay the value in notes. The Reserve Bank has also advised banks to use coin counting machines or accept coins by weight in order to be able to accept large quantities of coins tendered at the bank counters provided the coins are tendered after sorting out. Issue of Rs.10 notes in Mahatma Gandhi Series with capital letter "M" inset in numbering panels
The Reserve Bank of India will shortly be issuing Rs.10 notes in Mahatma Gandhi Series with capital letter "M" inset in numbering panel bearing the signature of Dr. Bimal Jalan, Governor. Except for the change in inset letter, the design of the Rs.10 notes to be issued now is similar in all respects to those issued earlier in the 'Mahatma Gandhi' Series. Some sections of the Print Media in their editions dated June 5, 2003, have carried stories on some difficulties and problems in, and plausible reasons, for non-implementation of the Reserve Bank of India’s Directive of November 7, 2001 regarding receipt and payment of cash only in unstapled notes. Members of public are hereby informed that the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has authorized all branches of public sector banks and all currency chest branches of private sector banks to accept and exchange all types of soiled/mutilated notes of all denominations. Refund value of such notes in exchange is, however, paid as per RBI (note Refund) Rules, 1975. At certain locations in a few cities/towns, bill boards have appeared indicating that the notes and coins of Rs.2 and Rs.5 denominations have ceased to be legal tender. The report is baseless and misleading. The Reserve Bank of India clarifies that the notes and coins of Rs.2 and Rs.5 continue to be legal tender.
