Dr. Subir Gokarn
Dr. Subir Vithal Gokarn has today taken over as the Deputy Governor of the Reserve Bank of India. Dr. Gokarn has been appointed Deputy Governor for three years from the date of his taking over. He will be the fourth Deputy Governor, the other three being Smt. Shyamala Gopinath, Smt. Usha Thorat and Dr. K.C. Chakrabarty. As Deputy Governor, Dr. Gokarn will look after the Monetary Policy Department, Department of Economic Analysis and Policy, Department of Statistics and Information Management, Department of Communication and Deposit Insurance and Credit Guarantee Corporation. Dr. Gokarn will also represent the Reserve Bank at the G-20 Deputies’ forum.
Prior to joining the Reserve Bank, Dr. Gokarn was Chief Economist of Standard & Poor’s Asia-Pacific, based in New Delhi. He assumed this position in August 2007 after having been Executive Director and Chief Economist of CRISIL, in which Standard & Poor’s acquired a majority stake in 2005. During his five-year tenure at CRISIL, besides his role as Chief Economist, he performed a variety of roles, including heading CRISIL’s research group and membership of the board of CRISIL and a number of its subsidiary companies.
Prior to joining CRISIL in 2002, he was Chief Economist and Industrial Finance Corporation of India (IFCI) Chair in Industrial Development at the National Council of Applied Economic Research (NCAER), New Delhi (2000-2002) and Associate Professor at the Indira Gandhi Institute of Development Research (IGIDR), Mumbai (1991-2000).
Dr. Gokarn graduated from St. Xavier’s College, Mumbai, with a B.A. (Hons.) in Economics (1979) and from the Delhi School of Economics with an M.A. in Economics (1981). After a two-year stint with the Bureau of Industrial Costs and Prices, he went on to pursue a Ph.D. in Economics at Case Western Reserve University, USA, which he received in 1989. His thesis work was on the impact of capital market liberalisation on industrial performance in South Korea. In 1997, he was awarded a Fulbright Research Fellowship, on which he spent an academic year at the Economic Growth Centre at Yale University, USA.
Industrial Economics, Monetary Economics, Corporate Finance have been Dr. Gokarn’s strengths. His academic research has straddled a number of areas, including industry, infrastructure and comparative studies of the East Asian economies, besides macroeconomics. He has authored a number of published works and project reports, including two co-authored books on the East Asian growth process and a co-edited volume on the structure of Indian industry.
He has contributed a fortnightly column on current economic issues to the Business Standard for 13 years. He was also a member of the Board of India Today Economists during 2002-09. He has regularly participated in committees and other activities organised by industry associations, academic institutions, government agencies and civil society organisations.
Born on October 3, 1959, Dr. Gokarn is married to Dr. Jyotsna Bapat, an independent researcher and consultant. They have a daughter, Kanak.
The Government of India today re-appointed Dr. Subir Vithal Gokarn as the Deputy Governor of the Reserve Bank of India for a further period till December 31, 2012 or till a regular appointment is made or until further orders, whichever is earlier.
Dr. Subir Vithal Gokarn was appointed as Deputy Governor in November 2009 for a period of three years from the date of his taking charge or until further orders, whichever was earlier. Dr. Subir Vithal Gokarn took charge as Deputy Governor of the Reserve Bank of India on November 24, 2009.

Dr. K.C. Chakrabarty
Dr. Kamalesh Chandra Chakrabarty has today taken over charge as Deputy Governor of the Reserve Bank of India. Government of India notified the appointment by its order dated June 5, 2009. The appointment is for a period of three years from the date of his taking charge or until further orders, whichever is earlier.
Dr. Chakrabarty will oversee Customer Service Department, Department of Administration and Personnel Management, Department of Information Technology, Department of Payment and Settlement Systems, Human Resources Development Department, Rajbhasha Department, Rural Planning & Credit Department, Urban Banks Department and he will be the Alternate Appellate Authority under the Right to Information Act, 2005.
Born on June 27, 1952, Dr. Chakrabarty has outstanding academic credentials. He is a second rank holder in his bachelor’s degree in science, first rank holder gold medalist in M.Sc statistics and has a doctorate in statistics. He started his career in teaching and research at the Benaras Hindu University and went on to have a long and distinguished career of 26 years at the Bank of Baroda in various capacities. Dr. Chakrabarty had exposure in banking operations and administration, including planning, management information system and economic research, development banking, Lead Bank Scheme, priority sector lending, resource management and investment banking, launching of new products and services, integrated treasury operations, risk management and corporate accounts, international banking and global syndication. He was posted as Chief Executive looking after United Kingdom Operations of the bank between 2001 and 2004 before being elevated as Executive Director of Punjab National Bank in 2004. He held the posts of Chairman and Managing Director of Indian Bank and Punjab National Bank and Chairman, Indian Banks’ Association before taking charge as Deputy Governor in the Reserve Bank of India.

Smt. Usha Thorat
Smt. Usha Thorat has today taken over as Deputy Governor of the Reserve Bank of India. Her appointment is for a period of five years.
Smt. Thorat held the post of Executive Director of the RBI since April 2004.
Born on February 20, 1950, Smt. Thorat received her masters degree in economics from Delhi School of Economics.
Smt. Thorat, who joined the Reserve Bank in April 1972, has vast experience in cash and debt management of central and state governments, government securities market development and regulation, financial markets, forex reserve management, foreign exchange management, banking regulation and supervision and payment and settlement systems. She was a member of faculty at Reserve Bank Staff College and has also served in the RBI's Guwahati Office.
She has been on the boards of Bank of Baroda, Indian Overseas Bank and the Securities Trading Corporation of India.
Smt. Thorat was on important Committees of RBI, viz., Group on Instruments of Sterilisation, Group of State Finance Secretaries on Fiscal Risk of Guarantees, Group on Ways and Means Advances to State Governments and Committee on Capital Account Convertibility.
She is presently member of the Committee on Global Financial Systems of the Bank for International Settlements and also served as a member of the International Task Force on Security Settlement Systems set up by the International Organisation of Securities Commissions of the Bank for International Settlements.
Smt. Thorat's hobbies include bird watching and yoga.

Smt. Shyamala Gopinath
Smt. Shyamala Gopinath, Deputy Governor is reappointed Deputy Governor of the Reserve Bank of India up to June 20, 2011. Smt. Gopinath was earlier appointed as Deputy Governor on September 21, 2004 for a period of five years.
Smt. Gopinath looks after Internal Debt Management Department, Foreign Exchange Department, Department of Government and Bank Accounts, Department of Non-Banking Supervision, Department of External Investments and Operations, Financial Markets Department, Secretary's Department, Department of Communication and Legal Department.

Smt. K.J. Udeshi
Smt. K J Udeshi has been today appointed as a Deputy Governor of the Reserve Bank of India. The Government of India has, in its notification issued today, stated that she will hold charge as the Deputy Governor till October 12, 2005 when she attains the age of 62 or until further orders.
Born in 1943, Smt. Udeshi is a post graduate in Economics, is a diploma holder in Bank Management from National Institute of Bank Management and is a Certificated Associate of the Indian Institute of Bankers (CAIIB). Joining the Reserve Bank in 1965, she rose from the ranks and was appointed as Executive Director in 2001. She has had a long stint in exchange control and the Reserve Bank's internal administration and human resources departments.

Shri Rakesh Mohan
Dr. Rakesh Mohan took over as Deputy Governor of the Reserve Bank of India today. His appointment is for a period of three years.
Dr. Mohan has been appointed Deputy Governor in place of Dr. Y.V. Reddy who has been appointed as Executive Director, International Monetary Fund.
As Deputy Governor, Dr. Mohan will look after the Monetary Policy Department, Department of External Investments and Operations, Internal Debt Management Cell, Department of Economic Analysis and Policy, Department of Statistical Analysis and Computer Services, Department of Government and Bank Accounts and Department of Expenditure and Budgetary Control.
Born on January 14, 1948, Dr. Rakesh Mohan received his Masters degree and Doctorate in Economics from Princeton University, and BA in Economics from Yale University. He is also a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from Imperial College of Science and Technology, University of London.
Dr. Rakesh Mohan has researched extensively in the areas of economic reforms and liberalisation, industrial economics, urban economics, infrastructure studies and economic regulation. He is the author of three books on urban economics and urban development and co-author of one on Indian economic policy reforms, and of numerous articles.
Prior to taking over as Deputy Governor of the Reserve Bank, Dr. Rakesh Mohan was Director and Chief Executive of the Indian Council for Research and International Economic Relations and Vice Chairman, Infrastructure Development Finance Company. He also held the position of Adviser to the Finance Minister and Chief Economic Adviser between January 4, 2001 and May 15, 2002. He is also Member of the Economic Advisory Council to the Prime Minister; Member of the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India; Member of the Board of Governors, Institute of Economic Growth; Member, Board of Governors, National Institute of Public Finance and Policy; Member, Governing Body, National Council of Applied Economic Research; Member, Board of Governors, Madras School of Economics.
He chaired the Expert Group on Railways (1999-2001); Expert Group on Commercialisation of Infrastructure Projects (1994-96), and the Expert Group on Petrochemicals (1992-93).

Shri Vepa Kamesam
The Government of India has re-appointed Shri Vepa Kamesam as a Deputy Governor of the Reserve Bank of India for the period from July 1, 2003 to September 23, 2003, when he will attain the age of 62 years or until further orders.
Shri Kamesam was originally appointed as a Deputy Governor of the Reserve Bank of India, on July 1, 2001, for a period of two years or till he attained the age of 62 years, whichever was earlier.
