The Reserve Bank of India will shortly issue Rs.10 denomination banknotes without inset letter in both numbering panels in Mahatma Gandhi Series - 2005 bearing the signature of Dr. D.Subbarao, Governor. Except for the change in the signature, the design of these notes to be issued now is similar in all respects to the banknotes in Mahatma Gandhi Series - 2005, with additional / new security features issued on April 27, 2006. RBI Clarification on phasing out of Banknotes
On enquiries from the press and members of public, the Reserve Bank of India has clarified as follows:As a part of its currency management programme, the Reserve Bank phases out banknotes of old design once banknotes in new design with additional/enhanced security features are introduced. The Reserve Bank has asked banks that when they receive bank notes with old design in Rs.500 denomination (1996 series), they may not re-issue such notes to public and instead return

Respect Your Banknotes : RBI appeals to Public
The Reserve Bank of India today appealed to members of public not to use banknotes for making garlands, decorating pandals and places of worship or for showering on personalities in social events, etc. Such actions deface the banknotes and shorten their life, the Reserve Bank stated and added that banknotes should be respected as they are a symbol of the Sovereign and public should not misuse them so that the life of banknotes is enhanced. Misuse of banknotes
It has been brought to the Bank's notice that members of public, institutions and others continue to write messages etc. on the watermark window and deface the portraits etc. on the banknotes. The Bank wishes to reiterate that such practices work against the Clean Note Policy of the Bank. All members of public, institutions and others are, therefore, advised not to write/inscribe anything whatsoever on the banknotes. Ajit Prasad ManagerPress Release : 2007-2008/473
