Premature redemption under Sovereign Gold Bond (SGB) Scheme - Redemption Price for premature redemption due on July 01, 2024 (Series XIV of SGB 2017-18 and Series IV of SGB 2018-19)

In terms of GOI Notifications F. No. 4(25) - W&M/2017 dated October 06, 2017 (SGB 2017-18, Series XIV - Issue date January 01, 2018) and F. No. 4(22) – B(W&M)/2018 dated October 08, 2018 (SGB 2018-19, Series IV - Issue date January 01, 2019) on Sovereign Gold Bond Scheme, premature redemption of Gold Bond may be permitted after fifth year from the date of issue of such Gold Bond on the date on which interest is payable. Accordingly, the next due date of premature redemption of the above tranches shall be July 01, 2024.

In terms of GOI Notifications F. No. 4(25) - W&M/2017 dated October 06, 2017 (SGB 2017-18, Series XIV - Issue date January 01, 2018) and F. The weekly schedule of auctions to be held during the quarter along with the name of States/UTs who have confirmed participation and tentative amounts indicated by them is as under

Performance of Private Corporate Business Sector during 2023-24

Today, the Reserve Bank released data on the performance of the private corporate sector during 2023-24 drawn from abridged financial results of 3,281 listed non-government non-financial (NGNF) companies. These also include data for 2022-23 to enable comparison (web-link https://data.rbi.org.in/DBIE) Highlights Sales Annual sales growth of listed private non-financial companies moderated to 4.7 per cent during 2023-24 from the high of 19.8 per cent in 2022-23, which included the post-pandemic recovery period (Table 1A). Among major sectors, sales of manufacturing, information technology (IT) and non-IT services companies rose by 3.5 per cent, 5.5 per cent and 7.9 per cent, respectively, during 2023

Lending and Deposit Rates of Scheduled Commercial Banks – June 2024

Data on lending and deposit rates of scheduled commercial banks (SCBs) (excluding regional rural banks and small finance banks) received during the month of June 2024 are set out in Tables 1 to 7. Highlights: Lending Rates: • The weighted average lending rate (WALR) on fresh rupee loans of SCBs stood at 9.39 per cent in May 2024 (9.55 per cent in April 2024). • The WALR on outstanding rupee loans of SCBs was unchanged at 9.83 per cent in May 2024. • 1-Year median Marginal Cost of fund-based Lending Rate (MCLR) of SCBs moved to 8.85 per cent in June 2024 from 8.79 per cent in May 2024.

RBI launches the July 2024 round of the Inflation Expectations Survey of Households

The Reserve Bank of India has been regularly conducting Inflation Expectations Survey of Households (IESH). The July 2024 round of the survey is being launched. The survey aims at capturing subjective assessments on price movements and inflation, based on their individual consumption baskets, across 19 cities, viz., Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Bhopal, Bhubaneswar, Chandigarh, Chennai, Delhi, Guwahati, Hyderabad, Jaipur, Jammu, Kolkata, Lucknow, Mumbai, Nagpur, Patna, Raipur, Ranchi and Thiruvananthapuram. The survey seeks qualitative responses from households on price changes (general prices as well as prices of specific product groups) in the three months ahead as well as in the one year ahead period and quantitative responses on current, three months ahead and one year ahead inflation rates. The results of this survey provide useful inputs for monetary policy.

The survey seeks qualitative responses from households, regarding their sentiments on general economic situation, employment scenario, price level, households’ income and spending. The survey is conducted regularly in 19 cities, viz., Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Bhopal, Bhubaneswar, Chandigarh, Chennai, Delhi, Guwahati, Hyderabad, Jaipur, Jammu, Kolkata, Lucknow, Mumbai, Nagpur, Patna, Raipur, Ranchi and Thiruvananthapuram. The results of this survey provide useful inputs for monetary policy. The agency, M/s Hansa Research Group Pvt. Ltd., Mumbai has been engaged to conduct the survey of this round on behalf of the Reserve Bank of India. For this purpose, the selected households will be approached by the agency and they are requested to provide their responses. RBI discusses the Evolution and Way Forward for Central Bank Statistics in its 18th Statistics Day Conference

Today, the Reserve Bank held its 18th Annual Statistics Day Conference with the theme ‘RBI Statistics@90’ as a part of the ‘National Statistics Day’ celebrations in the memory of late Professor Prasanta Chandra Mahalanobis, who made pioneering contributions in laying the foundations of modern day official statistics in India.

Sectoral Deployment of Bank Credit – May 2024

Data on sectoral deployment of bank credit for the month of May 2024 collected from 41 select scheduled commercial banks, accounting for about 95 per cent of the total non-food credit deployed by all scheduled commercial banks, are set out in Statements I and II. On a year-on-year (y-o-y) basis, non-food bank credit registered a growth of 16.2 per cent in May 2024 as compared with 15.5 per cent a year ago.

RBI imposes monetary penalty on The Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation Limited

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has, by an order dated June 24, 2024, imposed a monetary penalty of ₹29.60 lakh (Rupees Twenty-Nine lakh and Sixty thousand only) on The Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation Limited (the bank) for non-compliance with certain directions issued by RBI on ‘Credit Card, Debit Card and Rupee Denominated Co-branded Pre-paid Card operations of Banks’ reiterated in ‘Reserve Bank of India (Credit Card and Debit Card – Issuance and Conduct) Directions, 2022’.This penalty has been imposed in exercise of powers vested in RBI conferred under the provisions of Section 47A(1)(c) read with Section 46(4)(i) of the Banking Regulation Act, 1949.

RBI announces the SAARC Currency Swap Framework for the period 2024 to 2027

The Reserve Bank of India with the concurrence of the Government of India has decided to put in place a revised Framework on Currency Swap Arrangement for SAARC countries for the period 2024 to 2027. Under this Framework, the Reserve Bank would enter into bilateral swap agreements with SAARC central banks, who want to avail of the swap facility. It may be recalled that the SAARC Currency Swap Facility came into operation on November 15, 2012 with an intention to provide a backstop line of funding for short term foreign exchange liquidity requirements or balance of payment crises of the SAARC countries till longer term arrangements are made.

Premature redemption under Sovereign Gold Bond (SGB) Scheme- Redemption Price for premature redemption due on June 26, 2024 (Series XIII of SGB 2017-18)

In terms of GOI Notification F.No. 4(25) - W&M/2017 dated October 06, 2017 (SGB 2017-18 Series XIII -Issue date December 26, 2017) on Sovereign Gold Bond Scheme, premature redemption of Gold Bond may be permitted after fifth year from the date of issue of such Gold Bond on the date on which interest is payable. Accordingly, the next due date of premature redemption of the above tranche shall be on June 26, 2024.

In terms of GOI Notification F.No. 4(25) - W&M/2017 dated October 06, 2017 (SGB 2017-18 Series XIII -Issue date December 26, 2017) on Sovereign Gold Bond Scheme, premature redemption of Gold Bond may be permitted after fifth year from the date of issue of such Gold Bond on the date on which interest is payable. India’s International Investment Position (IIP), March 2024

Today, the Reserve Bank released data relating to India’s International Investment Position for end-March 2024[1]. Key Features IIP during January-March 2024: Net claims of non-residents on India declined by US$ 6.4 billion during Q4:2023-24 to US$ 361.7 billion as at end-March 2024. Indian residents’ overseas financial assets recorded higher rise (US$ 38.1 billion) as compared to that in the foreign-owned assets in India (US$ 31.7 billion), which led to the decline in net claims of non-residents during the quarter (Table 1).

Today, the Reserve Bank released data relating to India’s International Investment Position for end-March 2024[1]. Key Features IIP during January-March 2024: Net claims of non-residents on India declined by US$ 6.4 billion during Q4:2023-24 to US$ 361.7 billion as at end-March 2024. India’s External Debt as at the end of March 2024

The stock of external debt at end-March 2024 as well as revised data for earlier quarters are set out in Statements I (IMF format[1]) and II (old format). The major developments relating to India’s external debt as at end-March 2024 are presented below. Highlights At end-March 2024, India’s external debt was placed at US$ 663.8 billion, an increase of US$ 39.7 billion over its level at end-March 2023 (Table 1).
The external debt to GDP ratio declined to 18.7 per cent at end-March 2024 from 19.0 per cent at end-March 2023.
Valuation effect due to the appreciation of the US dollar vis-à-vis the Indian rupee and other major currencies such as yen, the euro and SDR[2] amounted to US$ 8.7 billion. Excluding the valuation effect, external debt would have increased by US$ 48.4 billion instead of US$ 39.7 billion at end-March 2024 over end-March 2023.
At end-March 2024, long-term debt (with original maturity of above one year) was placed at US$ 541.2 billion, recording an increase of US$ 45.6 billion over its level at end-March 2023.
The share of short-term debt (with original maturity of up to one year) in total external debt declined to 18.5 per cent at end-March 2024 from 20.6 per cent at end-March 2023. Similarly, the ratio of short-term debt (original maturity) to foreign exchange reserves declined to 19.0 per cent at end-March 2024 (22.2 per cent at end-March 2023).
Short-term debt on residual maturity basis (i.e., debt obligations that include long-term debt by original maturity falling due over the next twelve months and short-term debt by original maturity) constituted 42.9 per cent of total external debt at end-March 2024 (44.0 per cent at end-March 2023) and stood at 44.1 per cent of foreign exchange reserves (47.4 per cent at end-March 2023) (Table 2).
US dollar-denominated debt remained the largest component of India’s external debt, with a share of 53.8 per cent at end-March 2024, followed by debt denominated in the Indian rupee (31.5 per cent), yen (5.8 per cent), SDR (5.4 per cent), and euro (2.8 per cent).

RBI imposes monetary penalty on The Hirasugar Employees’ Co-operative Bank Limited, Belagavi, Karnataka

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has, by an order dated June 21, 2024, imposed a monetary penalty of ₹25,000/- (Rupees Twenty-five thousand only) on The Hirasugar Employees’ Co-operative Bank Limited, Belagavi, Karnataka (the bank) for non-compliance with the directions issued by RBI on ‘Exposure Norms and Statutory/Other Restrictions − UCBs’. This penalty has been imposed in exercise of powers vested in RBI, conferred under the provisions of section 47A(1)(c) read with sections 46(4)(i) and 56 of the Banking Regulation Act, 1949

Conference for the Directors on the Boards of select large Urban Co-operative Banks (UCBs) of Western Zone held at Ahmedabad on June 21, 2024

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) today held a Conference of Directors on the Boards of select large Urban Cooperative Banks (UCBs) in Western Zone. The Governor, RBI inaugurated the Conference on the theme ‘Governance in UCBs - Driving Sustainable Growth and Stability’. Deputy Governor Shri Swaminathan J., along with Executive Directors representing the RBI’s Departments of Supervision, Regulation and Enforcement, and other senior officials, also participated in the Conference. Reserve Bank had previously held similar conferences with the Directors of UCBs at Mumbai, Hyderabad and Lucknow in August 2023, January 2024 and April 2024, respectively.

The meeting was attended by all the members – Dr. Shashanka Bhide, Honorary Senior Advisor, National Council of Applied Economic Research, Delhi; Dr. Ashima Goyal, Emeritus Professor, Indira Gandhi Institute of Development Research, Mumbai; Prof. Jayanth R. Varma, Professor, Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad; Dr. Rajiv Ranjan, Executive Director (the officer of the Reserve Bank nominated by the Central Board under Section 45ZB(2)(c) of the Reserve Bank of India Act, 1934); Dr. Michael Debabrata Patra, Deputy Governor in charge of monetary policy – and was chaired by Shri Shaktikanta Das, Governor.

RBI launches Survey on International Trade in Banking Services (ITBS): 2023-24

The Reserve Bank of India has launched the 2023-24 round of its Survey on International Trade in Banking Services (ITBS). The survey, conducted annually since 2006-07, provides information on financial services rendered by branches/subsidiaries/joint ventures of Indian banks operating abroad and branches/subsidiaries of foreign banks operating in India, based on explicit / implicit fees / commission charged to customers. The survey schedule for the 2023-24 round is required to be filled in by the banks for branches/subsidiaries/joint venture of Indian banks operating abroad and branches/subsidiaries of foreign banks operating in India. The soft form of this survey schedule (both in Hindi and English – one of which can be used) is available on the RBI website under the head ‘Regulatory Reporting’-→ ‘List of Returns’-→ ‘ITBS – Survey Schedule’ [or under the head ‘Forms’ (available under the ‘More Links’ at the bottom of the home page) and sub-head ‘Survey’]. Duly filled-in schedule can be emailed by July 31, 2024.

RBI cancels the licence of The City Co-operative Bank Ltd., Mumbai, Maharashtra

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI), vide order dated June 19, 2024, has cancelled the licence of “The City Co-operative Bank Ltd., Mumbai, Maharashtra.” Consequently, the bank ceases to carry on banking business, with effect from the close of business on June 19, 2024. The Commissioner for Cooperation and Registrar of Cooperative Societies, Maharashtra has also been requested to issue an order for winding up the bank and appoint a liquidator for the bank.

Premature redemption under Sovereign Gold Bond (SGB) Scheme- Redemption Price for premature redemption due on June 18, 2024 (Series XII of SGB 2017-18)

In terms of GOI Notification F.No. 4(25) - W&M/2017 dated October 06, 2017 (SGB 2017-18 Series XII -Issue date December 18, 2017) on Sovereign Gold Bond Scheme, premature redemption of Gold Bond may be permitted after fifth year from the date of issue of such Gold Bond on the date on which interest is payable. Accordingly, the next due date of premature redemption of the above tranche shall be on June 18, 2024.

In terms of GOI Notification F.No. 4(25) - W&M/2017 dated October 06, 2017 (SGB 2017-18 Series XII -Issue date December 18, 2017) on Sovereign Gold Bond Scheme, premature redemption of Gold Bond may be permitted after fifth year from the date of issue of such Gold Bond on the date on which interest is payable. RBI imposes monetary penalty on Sonali Bank PLC

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has, by an order dated June 10, 2024, imposed a monetary penalty of ₹96.40 Lakh (Rupees Ninety Six Lakh and Forty Thousand only) on Sonali Bank PLC (the bank) for contravention of sub-section (1) of Section 15 of the Credit Information Companies (Regulation) Act, 2005 [CIC (R) Act] and the directions issued by RBI under the provisions of the CIC (R) Act on ‘Membership of Credit Information Companies (CICs)’, non-compliance with the ‘Reserve Bank of India (Know Your Customer (KYC)) Directions, 2016’ and the directions issued by RBI on ‘Time-bound implementation and strengthening of SWIFT – related operational controls’. This penalty has been imposed in exercise of powers vested in RBI conferred under the provisions of Section 47A(1)(c) read with Section 46(4)(i) of the Banking Regulation Act, 1949 (BR Act) and Section 25(1)(iii) read with Section 23(4) of the CIC (R) Act.

RBI imposes monetary penalty on Central Bank of India

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has, by an order dated June 11, 2024 imposed a monetary penalty of ₹1,45,50,000 (Rupees One Crore Forty Five Lakh Fifty Thousand only) on Central Bank of India (the bank) for non-compliance with certain directions issued by RBI on ‘Loans and Advances – Statutory and Other Restrictions’ and ‘Customer Protection – Limiting Liability of Customers in Unauthorised Electronic Banking Transactions’. This penalty has been imposed in exercise of powers vested in RBI conferred under the provisions of section 47 A (1) (c) read with sections 46 (4) (i) and section 51(1) of the Banking Regulation Act, 1949.

RBI imposes monetary penalty on Gujarat Ambuja Co-operative Bank Ltd., Ahmedabad, Gujarat

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has, by an order dated May 28, 2024, imposed a monetary penalty of ₹1.00 lakh (Rupees One lakh only) on Gujarat Ambuja Co-operative Bank Ltd., Ahmedabad, Gujarat (the bank) for non-compliance with the directions issued by RBI on 'Loans and Advances to directors, relatives and firms/concerns in which they are Interested' read with 'Loans and Advances to directors etc. - directors as surety/guarantors – Clarification'. This penalty has been imposed in exercise of powers vested in RBI, conferred under the provisions of section 47A(1)(c) read with sections 46(4)(i) and 56 of the Banking Regulation Act, 1949.

Today, the Reserve Bank released data on the performance of the private corporate sector during the fourth quarter of 2023-24 drawn from abridged quarterly financial results of 2,823 listed non-government non-financial companies. These also include comparable data for Q4:2022-23 and Q3:2023-24 to enable study of sequential (q-o-q) and annual (y-o-y) changes (web-link https://cimsdbie.rbi.org.in ).
